Heartland Football Club’s vehicle was involved in a serious accident on Friday at Umunna, near Okigwe, Imo State, while the team’s players and officials were en route to Abakaliki for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Pre-season Tournament.
Reports indicate that several players and officials sustained various degrees of injuries in the accident. They received first-aid treatment at a nearby facility before further medical evaluation.
In a statement confirming the incident, the former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) team explained that the accident occurred when their vehicle attempted to avoid an oncoming vehicle but ended up colliding with another vehicle that had been carelessly parked after an earlier accident.
“The accident happened at Umunna, close to Okigwe, still within Imo State,” the club’s statement read. “The vehicle, in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle, collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from a previous accident.”
Further details on the condition of the injured players and officials have yet to be released. The club is expected to provide more updates as they become available.
