The Imo State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with the recent arson attacks on the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) study centre and the residence of Senator Frank Ibezim in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area. The attacks, which took place last Monday, have caused widespread concern in the local community.
In a statement issued yesterday, police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the arrests: “I am pleased to announce that over eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson incidents in Ehime Mbano. Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be communicated in due course.”
The arson attacks have sparked protests in the community, with residents opposing the proposed establishment of a skills acquisition centre on the NOUN premises. Local sources allege that the Director General of the National Refugee Commission, Senator Ibezim, and a presidential aide had visited the site to assess its suitability for a refugee camp for repentant terrorists, contradicting the government’s public statements.
Both the Imo State government and Senator Ibezim have denied these claims. However, despite these denials, unidentified individuals set fire to both the NOUN centre and Senator Ibezim’s home.
Police investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to uncover more details surrounding the incidents.
