UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali, that took place on 17 September. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, delivered a statement on Tuesday, expressing Guterres’ outrage over the incident.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali,” Dujarric said in the statement. Guterres extended his condolences to the families of the victims, the transitional government, and the people of Mali. He also wished a speedy recovery to the injured, including a UN guard unit member.
The attack targeted a gendarmerie complex in Bamako, the capital of Mali. While the Malian Ministry of Security and Civil Protection confirmed that the situation was under control, they did not provide official casualty figures. However, media reports suggest that more than 70 people were killed, and over 200 others were injured in the attack.
Guterres urged the Malian transitional government to ensure that those responsible for the “despicable” attack are held accountable. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Mali in the fight against terrorism and efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.
