The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, hosted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and other dignitaries at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano, where 462 cadets were commissioned as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP). The graduation ceremony, known as the Passing Out Parade (POP), was held on September 7, 2024, following five years of rigorous academic and professional training for the cadets.
According to a press release from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/229, the ceremony was attended by a wide array of dignitaries, including Governors, National Assembly officials, military and paramilitary leaders, senior police officers, and representatives from academic institutions, traditional, and religious sectors. The event showcased the commitment to police reform and development under President Tinubu’s administration.
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, served as the Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony. In his address, the Vice President urged the newly commissioned ASPs to perform their duties with integrity, professionalism, and respect for human rights. He emphasized the Federal Government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare and development of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) while undertaking ongoing reforms to strengthen the nation’s security framework. “The newly commissioned ASPs will significantly bolster the effectiveness of the police,” the President stated, reaffirming his confidence in their capacity to maintain law and order.
The IGP, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support in the ongoing reforms aimed at transforming the NPF into a reformed and well-positioned force with renewed capacity and commitment to achieving its internal security mandate. He also appreciated the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Dr. Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, and the Chairman and Commissioners of the Police Service Commission for their strong support and collaboration.
Commending the new ASPs, the IGP praised their dedication, discipline, and commitment throughout their five-year training at the academy. “Their training encompassed both academic studies and hands-on professional training, ensuring they are well-prepared to take on the responsibilities of serving and protecting the citizens of Nigeria,” he noted. The IGP further emphasized that the foundation of effective policing lies in discipline, character, and professionalism, and urged the new officers to uphold these values as they embark on their policing careers.
The ceremonial Passing Out Parade marked a significant milestone in the continuous efforts to enhance Nigeria’s policing standards and was a proud moment for the cadets, their families, and the nation at large.
