The Lagos State Government has intensified its crackdown on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, with the recent impounding of 106 motorcycles during enforcement operations across various locations on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Media, Jubril Gawat, made the development known in Tuesday night’s post on X (formerly Twitter).
Gawat noted that the Lagos State Task Force, led by its enforcement team, carried out the operation at Iyana-School bus stop, First Gate bus stop by Igbo-Elerin, along Iyana Iba-LASU Expressway, Megida bus stop, and Ayobo roundabout.
This latest development is part of the ongoing enforcement of the commercial motorcycle ban in certain areas of Lagos, a policy aimed at curbing the activities of commercial motorcyclists in specified zones due to safety and security concerns.
The ban, which was first announced in May 2022, covers six local government areas (LGAs) and nine local council development areas (LCDAs), including the Ikeja, Surulere, Eti-Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island, and Apapa regions.
Since the announcement, the Lagos State Government has consistently conducted enforcement operations, leading to the confiscation of thousands of motorcycles.
Few days ago, the task force vowed to continue its operations, while warning that violators will face severe penalties, including the seizure and destruction of their motorcycles.
